LAKE MONSTER CULTURE

Coach Josh is a driven competitor and demanding mentor who believes that discipline, effort, and accountability build both great athletes and strong young people. A former high school basketball player, he has spent years in the gym developing his own game and helping others do the same through one-on-one training with youth athletes. He has served as a head coach in Calgary with RISE Basketball and the Bow River Basketball Association, where his U11 team earned a gold medal through hard work, structure, and a relentless team mindset.

Coach Josh brings a competitive edge to everything he does. He is a 2× Brodie League Champion, continues to train and compete himself, and is currently preparing for the Calgary Marathon, reflecting his belief that coaches should live the standards they expect from their players. A graduate of the Kelowna Centre for Arts and Technology, he combines creativity with intensity to build a program that is both professional and purpose-driven.

His approach is simple: no shortcuts, no excuses, and no wasted potential. Players are pushed to improve, held accountable, and taught how to compete with confidence under pressure. Coach’s goal is not just to develop skilled basketball players, but disciplined competitors prepared to succeed at the high school level and beyond.

Our mission is to develop serious young athletes into confident, disciplined competitors prepared for the demands of high school basketball and beyond.

Driven by a deep passion for the game, Lake Monsters Basketball provides structured, high-performance training, competitive play, and a culture of accountability that challenges players to grow every day. We focus on building complete athletes — strong in skill, conditioning, basketball IQ, and mental toughness — while instilling the work ethic and resilience required to succeed when opportunities arise.

We exist to give committed players a clear path to the next level, helping them earn roster spots, compete with confidence, and realize their potential through the game of basketball.

THE PROGRAM

Program Structure & Training Approach
Athletes train in a structured environment that emphasizes fundamentals, game-ready skill development, and high standards. Practices are built around purposeful reps — not mindless drills — and focus on the habits that translate to real performance: footwork, ball handling under pressure, finishing, shooting mechanics, and decision-making. We teach players how to read the game, move without the ball, defend with discipline, and compete through contact. Conditioning and athletic development are integrated so players build endurance, speed, and confidence to handle faster, more physical competition.

Competitive Development & Team Identity
Lake Monsters is built to give athletes experience in real competitive settings. Players learn to execute in structured team concepts, play with pace, and contribute within a system — the same expectation they’ll face in school basketball and higher levels. We emphasize team-first basketball: communication, effort, defensive responsibility, and playing the right way. Athletes are challenged to become dependable teammates who can perform under pressure, not just highlight players.

Season Experience
The Summer season runs approximately June 1 to September 1, with a consistent weekly schedule that includes 3 practices per week and competitive opportunities, including tournament play. We aim to provide a “professional-style” experience for youth athletes — organized training, clear expectations, and an environment that builds confidence through preparation. Players are supported with structure and coaching, but held to standards that require effort, focus, and discipline.

Tryouts & Selection
Because roster spots are limited, all athletes must attend tryouts and evaluation sessions. Registration places an athlete into consideration, but team selection is not guaranteed. Players are evaluated on a complete profile — skill level, effort, coachability, attitude, competitiveness, and overall team fit. Our priority is building teams of athletes who are committed to development and ready for high standards.

Player Development Standards
Lake Monsters athletes are expected to:

  • Show up ready to work and be coached

  • Compete hard and stay mentally engaged

  • Take feedback seriously and apply it quickly

  • Be accountable to teammates and the standard of the program

  • Represent the club with character on and off the court

This program is for players who want to earn opportunities, not be handed them.

What’s Included
The program experience is designed to feel elevated and memorable. Depending on the season plan, athletes receive elements such as professional uniforms, structured team training, and a media-driven experience that builds pride and community around the club. We want athletes to feel like they are part of something real — a program with identity, standards, and momentum.

Who This Program Is For
Lake Monsters is built for motivated athletes who:

  • Want to compete for school teams and higher-level opportunities

  • Are committed to training consistently

  • Want to be pushed in a structured environment

  • Take improvement personally and are willing to work for it

If an athlete wants a casual experience, this won’t be the right fit. If they want real development and a competitive culture, Lake Monsters is the place.
